4/18/02 - SOME THOUGHTS IN HONOR OF KAREN (HANSEN) Van Herwarde

First, I am shocked and deeply saddened to read the news about Karen Hansen. I'm glad I was able to speak with her at the reunion. We were friends in high school as we were in the Dance Band, Chorus, Girls Glee Club, and the musicals together. We're all about 40 now and it still seems far too young for any of us to die of cancer. She was a sweet person and always very helpful to me. I sang Evergreen as a solo at one of the Spring concerts and she accompanied me. She was a multi-talented musician, playing the piano, flute and had a nice voice. I especially admired her talent as a pianist. I'm sure she will be missed by many and I especially feel for her husband and two children. Their loss is unimaginable. - Betsy Landon

4/18/02 - NEW BUSINESS LAUNCHED...

Classmate Betsy Landon and two partners recently launched a business. The company provides Internet marketing and consulting and services to B2B companies, helping clients leverage the Internet to generate more qualified leads, shorten the sales cycle and measure ROI. www.InternetPerformanceMarketing.com. On March 23rd, Mass General Hospital held a fundraiser for Breast Cancer Research at the Middlesex School in Concord, MA. Livingston Taylor performed and Betsy had the honor of singing a duet with him. Pictures and more info are on her Web site at www.bostonmusic.com/livtaylor.htm Check out her song samples, too.

12/10/01 - YOU SAY PETRAKOS, I SAY MANGINI

Congratulations to Diana Petrakos and Chris Mangini (Class of 75, Sudbury High). They announced their engagement to their families while celebrating on Cape Cod this past summer. Diana has been busy since the reunion - along with knot-tying plans she's traveled to Honduras as a team leader for a group of medical students and doctors from Dartmouth Medical School while simultaneously arranging for the purchase of a new home here in the states. She is working in a new position at Dartmouth Hitchcock Medical Center as an organizational development specialist focusing on leadership development and employee relations with the medical units. Chris is a Veterinarian. Best of luck to you both!

10/25/01 - ZEN AND THE ART OF MIDDLE SCHOOL TEACHER SELECTION

The Westwood school system needed another teacher. They called a meeting to gather the most talented applicants and appointed a moderator to select the single best Middle School teacher.

Putting a bucket of water on the floor in front of the applicants the moderator said to them, "Without calling this a bucket tell me what it is."

One potential teacher with an impressive C.V. immediately said "You wouldn't call it a piece of wood".

Another applicant stated: "It's an implement, fashioned from organic matter, serving as a container for particles or substances that would escape a more porous environment."

At that moment Anne Thie walked up to the bucket and kicked it over, spilling the water. She was selected as the new Middle School teacher.

Congratulations, Anne, for boldly going where no Class of '80 student has gone before!

4/01/01 - GOODBYE, DEAR FRIEND

We are deeply saddened to report the loss of one of our dear classmates, Karen (Hansen) Van Herwarde, to breast cancer. Karen was a spark of joy: she always had a positive word to say about any person or topic, and was a truly wonderful human being.

One of Karen's gifts to this world was her passion for music. She was involved with music all her life, wrote songs, choral pieces, and played the organ for her church in Vernon, New Jersey.

Karen leaves a family in Sussex, New Jersey: her husband, Thomas, two sons, Thomas Jr. and Jeremy, her parents Edward and Eunice, of Westwood, as well as a sister and a brother.  Her loss is deeply felt in the class. We will miss our friend, and wish her family comfort during this difficult time.

CLASSMATES' COMMENTS

Nancy (Rogers) Belisle writes:

...I didn't stay long enough at the reunion but maybe at the next one. We live on Cape Cod right now but are moving June 30 back to Severna Park Md where we have lived before. Our son Mitch will be a junior and daughter Renee a freshman. Where have 20 years gone since the days of woods parties, ski trips and jaunts to Boston. Now we have to make sure our high schoolers don't to stupid things! If anyone is in the DC/Baltimore/Annapolis area look us up, we have plenty of room and provide a nice tour of the area.

"John Hallion would like to thank Westwood High's class of 1980 for their generous gift. John's car accident, which left him completely disabled, was so soon after high school, that his memories of Westwood High are the happiest ones he has. It's for this reason that being remembered by his classmates is something extra special for John. Twenty years is a long time, and it's nice to know that friendship and genuine caring is something that has no time limit. The gift will be put to great use for something John needs. Thank you again class of 1980, your remembering means more than words can say."
